GameTime Cleveland podcastSummary:

What a whirlwind past few weeks for our Cleveland sports teams. Johnny Manziel, Miles Austin in. Josh Gordan and Greg Little out. Joe Haden gets a rich extension. The Cavs show Mike Brown the door again and are still looking for a head coach. Meanwhile, they defy the odds and land the #1 overall draft pick again. Will they take the tall center with a back problem? Or the exciting shooting guard with Waiters still around? Or do they trade the pick to add veteran talent in an attempt to speed up the rebuilding effort? So much to talk about. It’s GameTime!

1Q: Trader Ray Has a Busy First Round

  • Traded with Buffalo (next year’s 1st and 4th) to move down to #9. Then trade up to #8 to take CB Justin Gilbert.
  • This addressed a huge team need (though we’d later find out WR was also a huge problem).
  • He’s a speedster and may also displace Travis Benjamin on punt returns.
  • Someone to pair with Joe Haden and allow Buster Skrine to move back to the middle where he can cover slot receivers.
  • Haden gets a huge contract extension after the draft to keep him here through 2019.
  • Why would Buffalo trade us two #1 picks for this? We couldn’t pass this up, really. We moved down 4 slots and grabbed their #1 and #4 next year.

2Q: Johnny Football

  • After watching Manziel slide past several teams, including Dallas at 17, Farmer saw an opportunity and knew he needed to get up above Kansas City. So he traded with Philly (no way they would have done this if Banner was still here) to move up four spots (costing us a 5th round pick) and picked their QB.
  • Farmer’s smokescreens threw most off his scent. Reports suggest we were going to take Bortles at #4 but traded down after Jax took him. Everyone thought he was in love with Carr or Bridgewater.
  • Was this a good move? Fans are split. You either love him or don’t.
  • QB Coach Dave Loggains went on an Arkansas radio show and said Johnny texted him and said “hurry up and draft me”. Haslam told the team to “pull the trigger” and trade up for him.
  • All Johnny all the time on the sports shows these days. His Vegas trip over Memorial Day weekend is now all the buzz.

3Q: Browns Will Have New Look at WR

  • Word came out Friday evening that Gordon failed another drug test and that Nate Burleson broke his arm in mini camp.
  • Knowing all of this, team still opted for an OL in Rd 2 (Joel Bitonio), a LB (Christian Kerksey) and a RB (Terrance West) in Rd 3 (trade with SF for our 4th and 6th).
  • Farmer signs Miles Austin and Earl Bennett. He is not a fan of superstar receivers apparently.
  • Farmer also cut Greg Little.
  • Overall draft: feels like we added talent and addressed some weaknesses (more depth at OL, CB, LB, RB)

4Q: Cavs Win Lottery. Brown Out Again.

  • Not to be left out, the Cavs fired HC Mike Brown after one year. His second stint was a mess. Team played no defense for him and he still has no clue how to run an NBA offense.
  • The other huge news was the NBA Draft Lottery. If only the Cavs could overcome 4th quarter deficits the way they overcome major odds in the NBA draft lottery. A 1.7% chance was all they needed to get the ping pong balls in their favor.
  • What will they do with that pick?
  • Rumors that we might trade it. (Kevin Love from Minnesota?)
  • If we keep it, do we pick the 7’ Center (Joel Embiid)? He’s young and has back problems. Oh oh.
  • Wiggins is another likely top choice. But if we take the Kansas SG, Dion Waiters might need to be traded.
  • Jabari Parker (Duke) is another possibility, but probably not the #1 pick in this draft class.
  • Forget Lebron coming back here. Not unless we get a new team owner.
